Ronan E. O’Malley, MD retired June 1, 2020 after more than 40 years in clinical practice. His passion for providing the best retina care possible has made an incredible impact not only in the Houston and Southeast Texas communities, but also throughout the entire country. He will be deeply missed.

Overview

Board-certified Medical and Surgical Retina Specialist Dr. Ronan O’Malley was born in Galway, Ireland. Traveling across the globe where he completed his education and advanced training in ophthalmology and vitreoretinal disease, he joined Retina Consultants of Texas and is notably one of our most seasoned surgeons. Treating all aspects of retinal disease, one of his unique focus areas is in pediatrics. He pioneered closed posterior vitrectomy for premature infants and partook in the recent groundbreaking Avastin for Retinopathy of Prematurity study.

Skills and Specialties

Dr. O'Malley performs both surgical and nonsurgical treatments for a variety of retinal diseases. He accurately diagnoses and treats age-related macular degeneration, macular tears and detachments, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinopathy of prematurity, and many more. Taking a conservative approach with patients, he uses a number of injections and helps patients manage their condition before surgery is recommended or needed. He is skilled to perform vitrectomy surgery and all other surgical treatments for even the most complex retinal conditions.

Education and Training

Dr. O'Malley graduated from Glenstal Abbey School, where he excelled on the rugby team. He graduated with honors from the National University of Galway, Ireland and became Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at Bristol Eye Hospital in England. His fellowship was in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Additional Contributions

With a number of written articles and manuscripts, Dr. O'Malley has also presented papers for the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ocular Surgery News, and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He served as president of the Houston Ophthalmological Society, Southern Retina Group in Houston, and on the Board of Directors of the Doctors Club in Houston. He is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.

Personal

Playing rugby was a passion during his school years and still is today. Dr. O'Malley enjoys following rugby, which remains one of the most popular sports in his home country. Dr. O’Malley speaks fluent Gaelic and Swedish, and is an avid birdwatcher and nature photographer.
