Dr. Tien Wong is a Houston native who is proud to be helping Texans as a board-certified Medical and Surgical Retina Specialist at Retina Consultants of Texas. Dr. Wong performs the latest surgical techniques to treat a number of vitreoretinal disorders, including retinal tears and detachments, macular holes and puckers, vitreous hemorrhages, and vascular occlusions. He works with patients to help them manage age-related macular degeneration, as well as diabetic retinopathy — two retinal diseases that do not have a definitive cure and require ongoing treatment and evaluation. As a member of Retina Consultants of Texas's renowned team of surgeons, Dr. Wong has access to the latest digital scanners, ophthalmology technology, and diagnostic tools so he can create the best treatment plan for his patients.
Education and Training
Graduating with honors from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Dr. Wong was one of nine students elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a junior. He then attended Baylor College of Medicine where he was a recipient of the President’s Scholar Award, which is given to the top seven students entering the medical school class and earned a place in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After earning his medical doctorate (M.D.) with honors from Baylor, Dr. Wong completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the world-renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Following completion of his training, Dr. Wong was a staff vitreoretinal surgeon at the Wills Eye Hospital for four years before returning to Houston to join Retina Consultants of Texas.
Ongoing Research
Committed to finding new ways to help his patients, Dr. Wong is an investigator in numerous clinical trials and the co-author of many scientific papers. He also serves as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He also remains active in many professional associations to remain up-to-date with the latest information, techniques, and technologies in retinal surgery.
