Overview
Dr. Charlie Zhang is a board-certified medical and surgical retina specialist originally hailing from Vancouver, Canada. He completed medical school and residency at the University at Buffalo where he was elected to chief resident during his final year. He then completed his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the top ranked eye hospital in the U.S. Dr. Zhang is actively involved in many meetings and research activities so that he can ensure he delivers compassionate individualized care while incorporating the latest advances in the field.
Education and Training
Dr. Zhang received his undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia from the honors physiology program where he received the Edgar C. Black memorial prize for the highest academic achievement in his class. He subsequently completed his medical training at the University at Buffalo where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He continued his residency training at the University at Buffalo where he served as the chief resident during his final year. He then completed his 2 year vitreoretinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the number one ranked eye hospital in the U.S.
Achievements and Awards
During his medical training he received the Earnest Witebsky, Kornel Terplan, Douglas. S Riggs and Donald W. Rennie awards for achieving the highest academic performance in microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology, respectively. He also received the Thomas J Guttoso award for the top ophthalmology applicant in his graduation year. During his ophthalmology residency training he was awarded the Outstanding Academic Achievement award each year. Throughout his residency and fellowship, Dr. Zhang has authored and published over 50 scientific, peer-reviewed journal articles and given talks at many national meetings.
