Overview
Dr. Matthew S. Benz is a board-certified Medical and Surgical Retina Specialist with Retina Consultants of Texas. With extensive training and experience in retinal surgery and complex retinal diseases, Dr. Benz brings a wealth of knowledge to our patients seeking help for their symptoms. A native of Adrian, Michigan, Dr. Benz is a 3rd generation ophthalmologist following in both his father and grandfather's footsteps, who practiced general ophthalmology for more than 50 years.His passion for the field of vitreoretinal disease has led to more than 50 published peer-reviewed scientific papers, abstracts, and book chapters. He conducts research annually and participates in clinical trials associated with retinal diseases.

Specializing in all areas of the retina, Dr. Benz is able to diagnose and treat dozens of conditions and diseases associated with vitreoretinal disorders. Some of his specialized work includes research on endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, intravitreal injections, and vitreoretinal surgery such as vitrectomy.
Education and Training
Dr. Benz received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Chicago and his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He then completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, the top-rated eye hospital in the nation. Following his fellowship, Dr. Benz served as chief resident and instructor at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Benz was a full-time faculty member at the Baylor College of Medicine prior to joining Retina Consultants of Texas, and continues to have an appointment as a clinical assistant professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor.
Societies and Memberships
Dr. Benz is proud to be a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and is an elected member of The Retina Society.
He has published numerous manuscripts and articles, and continues to play an active role in research and clinical trials for the advancement of treatment in retinal disorders. Fluent in both Spanish and English, Dr. Benz lectures throughout North America in both languages.
